PMBOKยฎ 7th Edition: Complete Guide for PMP 2025
The PMI Examination Content Outline (ECO) now centers on three domains: People, Process, and Business Environment. The 7th Edition moves away from process groups toward principles โ a fundamental shift from prescriptive to principles-based guidance.
What changed: PMBOKยฎ 7th replaces the 49 processes of 6th Edition with 12 Project Management Principles and 8 Performance Domains. This is not a removal of process knowledge โ exam questions still test scheduling, risk, cost, and quality โ but framed in outcome-based and hybrid contexts.
Exam distribution (2025): People ~42%, Process ~50%, Business Environment ~8%. Approximately 50% of questions are predictive (waterfall), 50% hybrid/agile. You must know both Scrum and traditional CPM scheduling equally well.

Mastering Baseline Management in Oracle Primavera P6 for EPC Projects
The baseline is the heartbeat of project control. In EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) projects where scope changes and procurement delays are routine, a disciplined baseline management process separates professional schedulers from the rest.
Step 1 โ Create the Project Baseline: Once the schedule is logic-checked, resource-loaded, and approved, navigate to Project โ Maintain Baselines โ Add โ "Convert current project to baseline." Name it BL0 (Original Contract Baseline). Lock it. Never modify BL0 โ it is your contractual reference.
Step 2 โ Assign the Baseline: Go to Project โ Project Details โ Baselines tab. Set "Project Baseline" = BL0. Set "User's Primary Baseline" = BL0 (for variance columns). Add columns BL Project Start, BL Project Finish, Start Variance, Finish Variance to your layout.

EOT Claims in FIDIC Contracts: A Practitioner's Complete Guide
Extension of Time (EOT) claims are among the most contested aspects of EPC contracts. Under FIDIC Red Book (1999) Clause 20.1, the Contractor must give notice of claim within 28 days of becoming aware of the event. Miss this window and you may lose entitlement entirely โ even if you have a valid claim on merits.
Under FIDIC 1999, Sub-Clause 20.1 states the claim notice must be submitted within 28 days of the Contractor being "aware, or should have been aware" of the delaying event. Courts and arbitral tribunals interpret this strictly. Even a valid 6-month delay may be unrecoverable if you missed the notice deadline.
Building a defensible EOT claim requires four elements: (1) Entitlement โ identify the contractual basis (Cl. 8.4, 8.5, 19, etc.); (2) Causation โ prove the event actually delayed the critical path; (3) Quantification โ use a recognized delay analysis method (TIA, Windows Analysis, or Collapsed As-Built); (4) Documentation โ daily site records, correspondence, RFI logs, weather records.
Most common mistake: Contractors submit a claim that proves the event occurred but fails to demonstrate critical path impact. The Engineer will reject it. You must show the delay event was on the critical path at the time of occurrence โ not as the path existed at contract award.

An S-curve is a cumulative graph of planned, actual, or earned values plotted over time. Its name comes from its shape โ slow start, steep middle, gradual tail โ which mirrors how almost every real project consumes effort and cost. On EPC projects, S-curves are how planners communicate progress to clients, lenders, and senior management in a single image.
There are three S-curves you'll typically build in Primavera P6: Planned vs Actual man-hours, Planned vs Actual cost, and Earned-value (BCWS / BCWP / ACWP). The mechanics in P6 are the same โ what differs is the data field you plot.
Your schedule must be resource-loaded (labour, equipment, or cost assigned to each activity) and recently scheduled (F9). Without resource or cost loading, the S-curve will be flat โ there is no quantity to integrate over time.
Step 1 โ Open the Activity Usage Profile
In the Activities window, go to View โ Show on Bottom โ Activity Usage Profile. A bar-chart pane will appear at the bottom of the screen. This pane is where the S-curve will be drawn. (If you're plotting resource hours specifically, use Resource Usage Profile instead โ same workflow.)
Step 2 โ Configure the Profile Options
Right-click anywhere inside the profile pane and choose Activity Usage Profile Options. On the Data tab:
- โTick Cost or Units depending on what you want to plot
- โTick Baseline, Budgeted, Actual, and Remaining as needed
- โChoose colours and bar styles for each series
On the Graph tab, switch from "Bars" to Cumulative Curve. This is the step that transforms the standard period-by-period bar chart into the smooth, integrating S-shape.
Step 3 โ Set the Timescale
Right-click the timescale at the top of the profile and pick the granularity that fits the project โ Week for sub-1-year schedules, Month for typical EPC jobs, Quarter for megaprojects. Too fine a timescale produces a noisy curve; too coarse a timescale loses early-warning signal.
Step 4 โ Select What the Curve Includes
By default, the profile shows the curve for activities visible in the top pane. To plot an entire WBS subtree (e.g. just "Civil Works"), select the WBS node in the top pane โ the curve below updates to that subtree only. To plot the whole project, click anywhere in an empty area or select all activities (Ctrl+A).
Step 5 โ Add Planned vs Actual Comparison
For a true Planned-vs-Actual S-curve, you need a baseline assigned. Project โ Maintain Baselines โ assign your contract baseline as the Project Baseline. Now in the Profile Options, ticking Baseline draws the planned curve, while Actual draws what's actually been earned. The gap between them is your variance โ visualised in real time.
Step 6 โ Export for Reports
To put the S-curve into a monthly progress report, right-click the profile and choose Copy Picture, then paste into Word, PowerPoint, or Excel. For a higher-quality version that lenders and clients can interrogate, export the period-by-period data via Tools โ Export โ Spreadsheet (XLSX) with Activity Usage Spreadsheet selected, then build the curve in Excel.
- โPlotting "Remaining Units" as if it were progress โ it isn't; you want Actual or Earned
- โForgetting to re-schedule (F9) before generating the curve โ the data may be stale
- โComparing Actual against current schedule instead of against the locked baseline
- โShowing cost S-curves in mixed currencies without a single rate-converted view
- โIncluding non-work activities (LOEs, milestones with cost) which distort the curve shape
A clean S-curve is one of the highest-leverage deliverables a planner produces. It compresses thousands of activity records into a single image a CEO or banker can read in seconds โ and is often the first thing the Engineer's Representative asks for at a monthly review.
