What PgMP is

The credential for people who run multiple related projects.

PMP is the credential for project managers. PgMP is PMI's credential for those who have moved up — who no longer run one project, but run several related projects toward a strategic organisational outcome.

  • Issued by: Project Management Institute (PMI USA)
  • Focus: managing programmes (multiple projects), not individual projects
  • Rarity: fewer than 5,000 PgMP holders exist globally; fewer than 500 in India
  • Sits above: PMP in PMI's credential hierarchy
  • Best for: senior PMs, programme managers, PMO leads, EPC package managers, delivery directors
Who PgMP is for

You're a fit for PgMP if…

01

You already run programmes

You're managing multiple related projects toward a defined strategic outcome — not just running one project after another.

02

Your role has strategic scope

Benefits realisation, stakeholder alignment across business units, and governance decisions are part of your daily job.

03

You want the differentiator

In a market saturated with PMPs, PgMP is one of the few credentials that visibly separates senior delivery leaders.

Eligibility

The two experience paths.

PgMP has stricter experience requirements than PMP — both project management experience and program management experience must be documented separately.

Path 1 — Secondary diploma

  • Education: secondary diploma or global equivalent
  • Project management experience: 4 years (6,000 hours)
  • Program management experience: 7 years (10,500 hours)

Path 2 — Four-year degree

  • Education: four-year bachelor's or global equivalent
  • Project management experience: 4 years (6,000 hours)
  • Program management experience: 4 years (6,000 hours)

Programme experience must involve managing multiple related projects toward a strategic outcome — not just running project after project. PMI is strict on this distinction; our application coaching helps you frame your work accordingly.

The three-step process

Application. Panel review. Exam.

Unlike PMP, PgMP is not just an exam. There are three gates:

  1. 1Application — three programme narratives + full experience log, reviewed by PMI staff
  2. 2Panel Review — certified PgMPs evaluate your programme experience against PMI's standard (typically several weeks)
  3. 3Multiple-Choice Examination — 170 questions in 4 hours; delivered online-proctored or at a test centre
Application coaching

The narratives that get accepted.

The PgMP application requires three programme narratives — each describing a programme you led, the outcomes it produced, and how you managed benefits, stakeholders and governance. This is where most applications stumble. We work through each of your narratives 1:1 before submission, framing your work in PMI's programme vocabulary.

The panel review

What the panel actually asks.

  • How you defined and managed benefits — not just deliverables
  • How you handled stakeholder alignment across business units
  • How you made programme-level go/no-go decisions
  • How you managed inter-project dependencies and resource contention
  • How your programme laddered up to strategic objectives
  • How you closed the programme — transition to operations

Every Pro-track cohort includes a 1:1 mock panel with the trainer — run in the same format PMI uses, using your own programme narratives.

The exam

170 questions. 4 hours. Five domains.

Format

  • 170 multiple-choice questions
  • 4 hours total, one 10-minute optional break
  • Online-proctored or test-centre delivery
  • Available in English

Five domains

  • Strategic Program Management
  • Program Life Cycle
  • Benefits Management
  • Stakeholder Management
  • Governance
PMP vs PgMP

Which one should you take?

PMP is for practising project managers. PgMP is for those who've moved up — running multiple related projects toward a strategic outcome. If you can only do one, and you're still leading individual projects, do PMP. If you already run programmes, PgMP is the credential the market genuinely values.

FAQ

Common questions.

PgMP is PMI's credential for professionals leading multiple related projects toward a strategic outcome. It sits above PMP in PMI's hierarchy and is materially rarer — fewer than 500 holders in India.
PMP is not a formal prerequisite for PgMP. Practically, most successful PgMP candidates hold PMP first — because the project management experience requirement is easier to document alongside PMP.
Typically 4–6 months end to end. Approximately 6–8 weeks of training and application prep, 4–8 weeks for the PMI panel review, and 4–6 weeks of exam prep. Timelines vary by PMI's panel workload.
After PMI accepts your application, certified PgMP reviewers evaluate your programme experience against PMI's standard. It's where many applications fail — typically because narratives read like project management, not programme management. Our mock-panel prep is built around this specific risk.
The GSTPM training fee covers our programme. PMI charges its own application and exam fees separately (currently around USD 800–1,000). WhatsApp us for the current PMI figures.
